I would like to share a story about a very special little girl, her name is Madilynn, and she is my daughter. Every year since 2008 we have went to Forest Paek in St. Louis, MO to show Madilynn she is not alone and many people fight like her everyday!
January 21, 2008 our world changed forever. That is the day she got her diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. This would be the start of many sleepless nights filled with blood sugar checks, insulin injections and juice. Madilynn was very sick and required a short stay in the hospital. We had to learn how to draw up insulin, count carbs, all about ketones and basically how to care for Madilynn and her auto immune disease. I never knew diabetes entailed so much, but we got our crash course and went home. Here we are 5 years later and going strong. A few changes have been made as far as insulin to carb ratio and how her insulin is delivered. Instead of injections she now pumps her insulin!! This was a decision she made in December 2012. After many injections she wanted to try a pump and now she wouldn't trade that pump for the world!!
Madilynn has TYPE 1 Diabetes, not TYPE 2. There is a lot of confusion when it comes to the differences between the two kinds. Madilynn did NOTHING to deserve this, it's an auto immune disease, nothing could have prevented it from happening. It isn't because she is over weight, lazy or doesn't eat healthy. She was 18 months old when diabetes reared it's ugly head at her. The only thing we could do was learn how her life was going to change and what our new jobs as her parents were to keep her alive.
