2013 is the year that marks 15 years of type 1 diabetes (T1D) for Kelly. It is happy and sad. Happy because Kelly is doing well and managing to lead an adult life that incorporates everything required to manage T1D with a full time job, active after-work life and day-to-day stress. Sad because 15 years is a long time. Kelly has lived more years with T1D than without it.
There has been so much progress in the quest to find a cure. 15 years ago, all the science was focused on basic research. Hundreds of mice were “cured.” The mechanism that caused the body’s immune system to go haywire and destroy the insulin cells in the pancreas was discovered. Insulins are better. Syringes have shorter and finer needles. Pumps and blood sensors work better and can communicate. A lot more is understood about how to manage the highs and lows and prevent complications. Kelly has benefited from these improvements and is living a more normal life than people with T1D did 15 years ago. Your support for diabetes research has helped Kelly and everyone else with diabetes.
There is no magic cure in sight. A vaccine to prevent T1D from occurring in people with a predisposition is likely. Complications from long term ravages of high and low glucose have better treatments. In some cases, the complications have even been reversed. JDRF is working hard to figure out ways to reduce the burden of diabetes until a cure is found. Human trials are underway with a credit-card size packet of insulin cells to place under the skin. This packet will protect the insulin cells inside from attack by the immune system and allow nutrients from the blood to flow inside the packet. Normal blood glucose has been maintained for up to two years with this high-tech packet. Even people with type 2 diabetes will benefit from this.
Your support means a lot to Kelly and our family and to help continue the research that will make diabetes less of a burden until a cure is found. Please support Kelly through our Walk team again this year with a donation to JDRF at walk.jdrf.cure . We are Kelly’s Walkers again and until it’s over.
Thank you so much for your support over these last 15 years. It is amazing and we are so grateful.
Yours very truly,
Ally and Kelly
