Welcome to "Eli's Entourage", our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Page! We are taking the steps to help achieve JDRF's mission: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. In the past 5 years, "Eli's Entourage" has raised over $23,000 with the generous donations of our friends and family! Let's continue to strive for a cure for diabetes together! The money our JDRF Walk Team raises will go directly to support this life-changing research.
As most of you know, Eli was diagnosed with diabetes on September 1, 2006, at only 3 years old. Eli is now 10 years old and has been living with this incurable disease for 7 years, and will continue to have Type 1 Diabetes for his entire life....until a cure is found, which will hopefully be in his lifetime! So far, Eli has had approximately 23,000 blood glucose checks, thousands of insulin shots (but for the past 5 years has received his insulin through his insulin pump), routine blood work and doctors appointments every 3 months, eye examinations, and to weigh/measure every bite of food he eats/drinks to ensure he gets the right amount of insulin based off his carbohydrates/activity level. This is A LOT for such a young boy to deal with every single day of his life, but he handles everything with bravery and acceptance, and continues to educate those around him what it's like to have Type 1 Diabetes. Eli doesn't let having diabetes stop him in any way! He remains physically and mentally active by regularly participating in his karate class twice weekly, riding his bike, swimming, reading, doing math problems (yes, he likes math!!), and actively playing with his sister, Faith, every day. Eli wakes up each day and acts as if having diabetes is "normal"...he is an inspiration and a true hero to me...I am a proud mom for sure!
Please help us continue our fight to cure diabetes by joining our walk team, or by making a monetary donation to the JDRF in honor of "Eli's Entourage". Over the past few years, we have been so thankful for our friends and family rallying around Eli to support this cause. With your efforts, it also makes Eli feel as if he is part of something very important. He has understood for many years now how devastating diabetes can be on a person's body. Although Eli himself has been in excellent health, diabetes still remains the leading cause of kidney failure, adult blindness, and non-traumatic amputations, and is a leading cause of nerve damage, stroke, and heart attacks. Diabetes also kills one American every 3 minutes and is the 6th leading cause of death reported in the U.S. These are SCARY statistics, especially being a mom of a young child with diabetes. My hope is that by the time Eli is an adult, there will be a cure for this devastating disease.
PLEASE SUPPORT "ELI'S ENTOURAGE" and the JDRF research!! Any amount you can give will be greatly appreciated, and even if you can't donate, PLEASE join our walk team and come support Eli at Forest Park, MO on October 6, 2013 for the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes!!!!
With love and thanks!
Veeda Fowler Rinkel (the lucky mom of a very special young man!)
