Join me in the fight to cure, better treat and prevent type 1 diabetes!

Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page! As some of you may or may not know, I'm a type 1 diabetic. I've been so for 31 of my 35 years. Diagnosed shortly before my fourth birthday, my main concern at the time was why those Three Musketeers candy bars I loved so much were suddenly off limits. That was a big concern for this three year old!

As I grew up, however, the concerns changed...understanding the warning signs when my blood sugar was low or high...learning how to prick my finger to test my blood...learning to give myself my insulin injections...learning how different foods affected my blood sugar...learning how to handle both my diabetes and myself in social situations.

There was plenty to learn. I learned several things the hard way. Occasionally, there were nights my blood sugar was far too low, mostly requiring late-night candy bar and orange juice sessions. On at least one occassion as a young man, it required an emergency room visit. I would visit that hospital again later for a week as I learned how important it was for me to NOT miss a flu shot.

I was lucky in that I had plenty of help from my parents. I was truly blessed that they took such an active role in making sure I was both as healthy as I could be and as ready as I could be to take personal responsibility for my diabetes. Their effort and understanding was aided by the type of research that JDRF does. JDRF, while researching relentlessly for a cure, also conducts research to help make the lives of those currently with type 1 diabetes easier. Better medicine, testing methods and management strategies are some of the key things JDRF also works on. This is all important, vital work that will hopefully one day make it so no one has to learn the lessons I mentioned earlier.

With that in mind, on April 20th, I will participate in the Walk to Cure Diabetes. I would be thrilled if you would donate towards my goal. Anything that goes towards the fight against Diabetes would be appreciated more than you know.

    Thank you for your support!
