Madison's Meter Patrol

My name is Madison Moraja and I've had type 1 diabetes for one year (diagnosed on November 4, 2011). It's been a really hard year. And EVERY DAY I PRAY FOR A CURE! On April 27th, I'll be leading my team - Madison's Meter Patrol - in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and young adults suddenly, and can be fatal. It has a lot of daily challenges for a kid, too. For instance, I have to wear an insulin pump all the time and prick my fingers sometimes over 10 times in a day. I know I'm lucky in many ways that I can still run and play. But many times when I do, I get bad headaches, start shaking and turn pale. I also can't easily go over my friends house any longer, and I get waken up in the middle of the night for my parents to check my blood sugar. There are many times that I feel so left out, especially at school.

There is some hope, though. JDRF is focused on finding a CURE! It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
