Welcome to Luke's Lightning McTeam Walk to Cure Diabetes Page!
Luke's Story: Our Lukey was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) a couple of months after he turned 2. One day he had a virus and the next he was in a life-threatening and critical situation at Brenner's Children's Hospital to get his blood sugar under control. Almost one year later, by the grace of God, a great team of doctors, and his parents' diligent care, Luke is not only surviving, but thriving despite his T1D. Luke is now 3 and loves purple, doggies, and Lightning McQueen. He's growing well and a he is high-energy dude who's not gonna let ANYTHING bring him down!
However, T1D is a long-term battle. Each day, each meal must be carefully planned and his blood sugar, insulin levels, and overall health constantly monitored. Luke's (and his family's) days will continue to be filled with finger pricking, counting carbs, needles, pumps, and extra insulin until there is a cure.
What is Diabetes and Is there A Cure?:
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
Researchers are taking great steps every year to get closer to a cure. Luke's endocrinologist told them just this week that an "artificial pancreas" device that will be a wonderful help could be FDA-Approved at the end of 2015. The experts believe a cure is possible within the next couple of decades. The faster research can happen, the faster we can get there!
So, What Can We Do?:
We're taking steps to help JDRF progressively remove the impact of type 1 diabetes (T1D) from people's lives until no one has to fear developing this disease. By joining our Walk to Cure Diabetes team and making a donation to JDRF, you'll raise money to help fund critical T1D research and create a world without T1D.
JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. Every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
The challenge we've set ourselves - to raise money for JDRF and to walk - is modest compared to the daily challenges of life with T1D, which involves a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar testing and insulin injections to manage the disease.
Will you accept the challenge to make a difference by walking with us? Just click on the "Join This Team" button and start fundraising. (Links to get started are found by clicking the blue buttons at the top of the page.) You can join us in person on October 26th or you can join us as a Virtual Walker, supporting us in thought and through fundraising. And if neither of those options works for you, we gratefully appreciate any donations you can make to our efforts!
God Bless You and Thank you for your support!!
