Hi, my name is Sky, and I have type 1 juvenile diabetes. I was first diagnosed in December of 2009. When I was first diagnosed I did not like the idea that I had diabetes. I thought it made me different, so I told my mom to call this disease the "D"word. As time grew on I did not only realize that it did not make me different, but I also realized that I could be open about diabetes to my friends and family. I have diabetes. Diabetes does not have me. Yes, it does stink every once in a while when I want to have some ice cream but cannot because my blood sugar is high. Yes, it does stink when I am on a field trip at school and have to wait to go on because my blood sugar is low, but not only have I learned to deal with it, I have learned to over power it. Diabetes is all about eating right and lots of exercise, but isn't that what everybody should do? So why does that make me different? It doesn't. Eating right and exercising is what keeps you healthy, and that is really what diabetes is about.
FROM MOM: That's my daughters positive outlook that she possessed from day one; WE COULDN'T BE MORE PROUD! We continue to help and nurture her outlook, but wouldn't it be great not to have to worry at all? To be able to simply be a kid? Diabetes is manageable and for that we give THANKS but it is 24/7 and super challenging at times. We are grateful SKY does VERY WELL but we still need your help!!! PLEASE join us on our mission to find a cure so that all 15,000 kids a yr including mine that get diagnosed could be spared!!!
With much LOVE and THX in advance,
Sky and Family
