Dylan Elizabeth was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D - Insulin Dependent) at the age of 23 months. Dylan has been living with the disease for just over 4 years now and while she is learning to navigate life with T1D, her routine is far from easy. This year Dylan is a first grade student and being a full-time student with Diabetes presents new sets of daily challenges.
Every day Dylan goes to school her life is at risk.
Why? Because Dylan needs a nurse or trained aide to check her blood glucose and administer insulin multiple times throughout the day or she could enter into a coma ?or worse. Last year, the school nurse fell ill and there wasn?t anyone trained at the school to help with her daily care. This means Christa wasforced to leave her job every time the nurse was absent or a substitute nurse was unavailable - which in this case lasted well over a month! Luckily in Dylan?s case, she has a strong family support system that is able to help in crises like these and Christa has her own private practice that allows her to work around these types of emergencies otherwise for sure Christa would have lost her job. Unfortunately though, many of the over 200,000 children with diabetes in America have no support system in school when they need insulin or face a diabetes emergency. Some are even turned away from their neighborhood school simply because they have diabetes. (Dylan was turned away from school in pre-k 3 because the school refused and was not required to provide the care she needed).
It is for this reason and a million other daily reasons like it that Your Support could help:
Just think, as parents how nervous we are just bringing our children to the doctor?s for their annual shots? Dylan is injected with needles at least 12 times a day. With every infection and illness she is at serious risk, more often than not being hospitalized for weeks at a time.
This should not be her normal. We need to find a Cure.
