Hello Family and Friends,
Wow. It is so hard to believe that Grant has been dealing with T1D for over four years now. When he was first diagnosed (September 2009) we were overwhelmed. We didn't know what to expect, what to do. We only knew our lives had changed forever. So we registered for JDRF's Walk to raise funds for research and a cure. It was the only thing we could think of that would make a difference.
Fast forward to 2013 (and four walks later) and I am so proud of Grant! Although living with Juvenile diabetes still stinks and he is still fighting high and low blood sugars constantly, he has really stepped up as an advocate for JDRF. Earlier in the year Grant applied for the 2013 JDRF Children’s Congress. Out of nearly 1,500 applicants, he was one of 160 selected to represent JDRF and Northern Nevada in Washington DC! His goal was to encourage our State Representatives to approve funding for the special diabetes program.
In July, Grant and Roland descended on our Nation’s Capital along with 159 other kids with T1D. What an experience! The kids attended a Town Hall meeting, a Congressional Hearing and personally met with their State Representatives to put faces and names to this horrible disease. They explained what it was like to have to test your blood sugar up to 10 times a day (EVERY DAY), to inject themselves with insulin when they eat (EVERY SNACK, MEAL, DRINK), to be sure they have simple sugar on hand for when their blood sugar goes too low (AT ALL TIMES) and frankly, why funding the special diabetes program is so important.
Every one of these kids (and countless others) is desperate for a cure and you and I can help make that happen!
The Reno Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes is on October 6, 2013 at the UNR campus. Our Team is Hooks for Hope. Every year we keep our name – and shirts – in the interest of funneling more of the proceeds to funding research for a cure. Many of you contributed in Grant’s name (or mine, Roland or Jordyn) last year and many of you joined our team, raised money and walked beside us. That meant the world to Grant and our family.
If you can walk with us please JOIN OUR TEAM online and let me know as soon as possible so I can get you a Hooks for Hope t-shirt.
Please visit our Walk Web page if you would like to donate online at http://walk.jdrf.org
If you prefer to pay by check please make it payable to JDRF and send it to us at 3724 Calgary Drive, Reno NV 89511.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. We really appreciate your support, and I do believe that together we truly can make a difference.
