Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!
I'll be taking part in this year's Walk to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
My #1 reason for walking this year is to show support for my 7 1/2 yr old sister Trinity. Trinity was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 1/2. She was so sick when she was diagnosed that she didn't even know who any of her family was. Doctors said she may pass away with in the next 6 to 12 hrs, they told my parents to start making plans for her passing. It was so scary.Lucky for us my sister's a fighter and she pulled out of it, and started her new life.
Now she has to poke her fingers 10x a day to check her blood sugar levels, has to watch everything she eats, has to know how many carbs are in everything she does eat so she can be given insulin to keep her sugar levels where they need to be. She is on an insulin pump that gives her small amounts of insulin 24/7, but she always has to be given more insulin for the foods she eats. Every now and then she has to get a normal shot because her pump line does get clogged sometimes.
Trinity is a happy, healthy little girl but having T1D is very hard on her and my whole family. One of the worst things is if her blood sugar levels drop to low she can pass out, have a diabetic seizure, she's had 4 of them now, or even worse death. High blood sugars can cause her to go into a coma and possibly die. If her blood sugars aren't controlled she could develop major complications as she gets older.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
Please support me and donate to my Walk fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible today?
Thank you for your support!
