Welcome to our SAGE RIDGE SCHOOL team page!
EVENT: JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Date: Sunday,October 6th Location: UNR Time: 9:30 AM
Hi! My name is Alli Christy and I'm in the 6th grade class at Sage Ridge School. I am really excited that Sage Ridge School has a team at the JDRF Walk on October 6, 2013. I'd like to take this opportunity to educate Sage Ridge School's friends and family about Type 1 diabetes. With your support, the JDRF researchers will continue to provide better treatments and ultimately find a cure for me and all the other kids with Type 1 diabetes.
What causes TYPE 1 diabetes? Scientists do not know yet what exactly causes Type 1 diabetes. It is also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes. Scientists do know that at this time it can't be prevented, there is no cure and TYPE 1 DIABETES is not caused by eating too much sugar!!!
What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes? T1D is much less common and often occurs in childhood. The youngest newly diagnosed child that I visited at the hospital was under 1 years old. Type 1 occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys certain cells in the pancreas, an organ that is about the size of a hand that is located behind the lower part of the stomach. Theses cells, called beta cells, normally produce insulin which is a hormone that turns sugar/glucose into engery for the body. When the beta cells are destroyed, no insulin can be produced. When this happens, glucose stays in the blood stream and causes serious damage to all the organs of the body. For this reason, kids with Type 1 diabetes need to take insulin to stay alive. You can't outgrow T1D but scientists think this may be the next disease cured!
Note: Type 2 diabetes is often caused by excess weight and inactivity(this is not the kind that I have!!). Type 2 is more common in adults and can be prevented with healthy lifestyle choices.
When was I diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes? I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on August 8, 2006. I was 4 1/2 years old. I had the following symptoms: thirsty, sudden weight loss, headaches, and frequent urination.
How has my life changed since I was diagnosed? I think about diabetes 24 hours a day. I test my blood sugar every few hours. If my blood sugar is low, I need sugar. If my blood sugar is high, I need insulin. Instead of shots, I choose to wear a small wireless machine(size of a pager) that gives me insulin. I am sure to count the amount of carbohydrates in my snacks and meals. I give myself 1 unit of insulin for about every 18 carbohydrates. Further, I often take into account many factors that are difficult to predict: sleep, stress, exercise, food digestion rates, hormones, etc. Although I am able to do everything on my own, my parents are always available to help me make decisions.
Note: I ate healthy before I was diagnosed, so my diet has not changed. I can do any activity that you can do...swim, ski, ride horses, camp, sleepovers etc.
How should you treat me or other kids with Type 1 diabetes? Just the same as anybody else. Some kids have asthma or allergies....some kids have Type 1 diabetes.
What are a few statistics on Type 1 diabetes?
40% of everyone in US carries one or more of the HLA genes which lead to an increases risk of Type 1
One in 400-500 people in the population develop Type 1, but 1 in 20(5%) are at risk if a first degree relative has Type 1.
80% of JDRF money raised goes direclty to research. Past and present research efforts help local kids like myself. There are new and improved insulin pumps, artificial pancreas(in outpatient trials-available in about 4 years!!), ....encapsulation, smart insulin, restoration-there are many amazing research projects in the works. I often wonder which one will ultimately become the cure!!!
Thanks so much for considering walking and/or donating to Sage Ridge School's JDRF team. With our commitment to research and your help, I know that there will be a cure for diabetes!!! Thanks so much for making JDRF one of the many important causes that you support!!!! Let's turn Type 1 into Type None!!!
