Hello! My Name is Mia Cooper and I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 11 months. I am 6 Years old now and I wear the insulin pump 24 hours a day since the beginning. I don't like having diabetes but it's a part of my life. I need to be tested 8 to 10 times a day and have my site changed every 3 days. I often ask why I have diabetes. I am in First Grade and love school. I test 3 times at school with help from our nurse Mrs. M. I'm such a big girl I can test myself but I still need help with the meter. I'm learning how to add numbers while I learn how to read food labels. I'm learning the differences between highs and lows and what I should do.
On August 26, 2011 my brother DJ was diagnosed with diabetes at 15 months. He is also on the pump and doing great. I show him all the tricks of diabetes. I tell him that he can't have things with alot of carbs. My sister Julie still has a chance to devleop this disease. We have been walking as Cooper's Crew since 2007 the year I was diagnosed.
This year, I'll be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $89 million.
Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children.
There is some good news, though. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
PLEASE JOIN OUR TEAM. We want to reach our goal of 50 fundrasing walkers and 5,000 in donations. Join today www.walk. jdrf.org Cooper's Crew.
Diabetes doesn't stop me from swimming, drawing, dancing and playing with my friends. Please walk with me.
