Shayne is bright, curious, creative and persistent. He has a great sense of humor and is wise beyond his short 8 years. He is clever, always creating new ideas; he loves watching TV because he thinks he will be on it some day! His favorite show is "Shark Tank", he is determined.
Shayne has Type 1 Diabetes, but..............it does not define him. It is not "who" he is.
Shayne was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on February 7, 2012. Through our shock and despair, we began our journey down this unpredictable road. Every day since, has been a challenge, figuring out the perfect way to keep Shayne healthy, in every way. This road has held ongoing fears, anger, insecurity, tribulations, as well as, triumphs.
Through our struggles and ongoing challenges, we continue to learn of the impact of this disease. We also grow stronger and more determined, to fight this battle. There is constant worry, stress, anxiety, and heartache, but we refuse to let this disease control our lives.
We, are all determined.
While I am so proud of Shayne every single day, my heart breaks continuously for him. The impact that this disease has had on his life, is immeasureable. He will never understand the word "carefree". Before riding his bike, he has to test his blood sugar, then retest every hour of continued physical activity. Having a bowl of ice cream becomes a science project. First, he has to carefully measure the amount, then calculate the "carbs" so he can give himself the correct amount of insulin. Insulin saves his life every day. His pancreas continues to be attacked by his own immune system, and does not produce enough insulin to keep him healthy.
During the course of this year, Shayne has become more responsible than most adults. He cares for his Diabetes, his "pump" and overall health independently, with out complaint of being poked and prodded, having to organize his life around his disability, and managing all of the anxieties that he has as a result of being 8, with a life threatening disease.
The tiniest bit of hope keeps us motivated and hopeful for a cure for Shayne.
Again, this year, we will walk. We will walk because it gives us hope, and reminds us of our steadfast determination to continue our journey, for Shayne....for our curious, our clever and our wise and brave, little man.
We hope you can support our Team "Sugar Shayne", and Shayne. We are so grateful for your ongoing support and generosity.
We truly thank you and we hope to see you on Walk day!
