At the average Yankee game, there are about 40,000 fans in the stands. I’ve had to test my blood sugar that many times since I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 2. It’s been 10 years since then, and along with 40,000 finger pricks, I have also done 1,500 insertions, had a low blood sugar of 27, and a high blood sugar of above 700, along with 2 hospitalizations.
Type 1 Diabetes, which is different from Type 2 Diabetes, is an auto immune disease that attacks the part of the pancreas that usually produces and distributes insulin. Insulin helps to regulate the amount of sugar in the bloodstream. Since my body does not produce insulin, I have to wear an insulin pump at all times to give it to myself. I have to bolus (give myself insulin), before I eat or when I have a high blood sugar.
JDRF is an organization that helps raise money to cure and treat the complications of diabetes. Every year they host a walk at the Yonkers Raceway. The walk is a lot of fun, with bouncy castles, face painting, and of course the walking around the track. This year will be especially fun because our team, Ragin’ Katie’s, is being honored for its dedication to JDRF for the last 10 years. Ragin’ Katie’s has raised over $100,000 since we started walking in 2003.
The walk is fun, but it is also an important fundraiser. We’d love to see you at the walk, but if you can’t make it we, as always, appreciate your support, especially this year. You can donate online or send a check. Plus, if you come to the walk you get a free Ragin’ Katie’s team shirt. Hope to see you there!
