This is the fifth year we will be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes.
As many of you know, our son, Bryce, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was just three and a half years old. While you look at him and see an active, healthy, 8 year old, his body has failed him...
His pancreas no longer works.
He needs insulin to survive...without it, he would die within a week.
He will not outgrow this.
Type 1 diabetes is not due to poor diet or lack of exercise.
His sweet little fingers get pricked 10-15 times a day to check his blood sugars (that is over 18,500 drops of blood since he was diagnosed!).
Every carbohydrate he eats must be counted so he can get the right amount of insulin.
Other things like illness, exercise, stress, growth hormones, (the weather, rotation of the moon, etc.) effect blood sugars, making diabetes completely unpredictable and frustrating.
We wake up and test him multiple times at night to make sure his blood sugars don't drop so low that he never wakes up again.
There is no taking a break from diabetes...it is always there, always ready to make your head spin.
For these (and many, many more) reasons, we are committed to raising as much as we can to help find that cure. So that our son can lead a long, healthy life, free of complications, free of injections and life support devices.
JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure. They are also a huge support for those of us living with type 1 in our families.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
