At 2 ½ years old Henry was loosing weight, soaking through two diapers a night, drinking a lot, and had mood swings with times of exhaustion. No parent wants to think that something may be wrong with their child so I rationalized and made excuses. ?He is two? was one of the best seeing as that covered a myriad of problems. It was when he started throwing up and getting very lethargic that I decided to take him into the clinic. From Sunday night to Monday morning he had gotten so bad his breathing was labored and he couldn?t walk or talk. Looking back now I kick myself that I didn?t take him in to Urgency over the weekend, but I was telling myself he must have the stomach flu.
The one good thing I did was as soon as I got to the doctor?s office I asked for a glucose test so we could rule out diabetes first. His reading was well over 300. There was no doubt now and I couldn?t deny it anymore. My beautiful son was going to spend the rest of his life, like millions of others, living with diabetes. We rushed to the hospital in the ambulance and got admitted for Ketoacidosis. We spent a 4 days at the hospital getting his blood sugar leveled out and getting educated so we could start a new life. The last 7+ years have been hard, but through everything he has remained strong and I have my vibrant, smiling, energetic, son back-now 10 years old.
As a way for our family to deal with diabetes we have decided to do more than what is just required. We want people to know more about diabetes and to realize that people you know and probably see everyday are living with this condition. Over 21 million Americans live with diabetes, Type I and II.
With your help we can find a cure for diabetes in my son?s lifetime.
