Join our fantabulous team, Charlotte's Champions, for our second JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes on Sunday, September 29 at Oaks Park in Portland. We are excited about this year's walk for this terrific organization, especially since Charlotte is one of four official Ambassadors for the event, representing all those who live with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its many daily and lifelong challenges. Ms. C also celebrates her eleventh birthday the day following the walk so woohoo to an abundance of uplift and momentum!
Last year about thirty friends and family joined us on our inaugural walk. It was an amazing day of community and love. We raised more than $2,500 for the JDRF - we hope to surpass that goal this year.
We are a little more than a year into T1D, a chronic autoimmune disease that wages war on her pancreas and insulin-making cells, and the heartache we first experienced has been replaced by the ryhthm of her unpredictable life and determination that Charlo and Max have great adventures and unending support. We are buoyed and thankful for Charlo's and Max's grace, strength, stamina, and courage in the face of this beast for which there is no cure. A disease that demands so much rigor, attention, and flexibility.
Charlotte has shown great self-determination this past year. She checks her own blood sugar six times a day by pricking her fingers and pumping blood out of them; figures out her carbs before every meal or bite; and manages her Omnipod insulin pump with aplomb and confidence. She never complains or cries. Just gets it done and moves on (though sometimes the weariness shows in her eyes).
While inspirational, what we want is a cure for T1D, not a lifetime of pricks, insulin-dependency, pumps attached to her body 24/7, uncertainty. A cure for Charlotte and all those whose T1D is invisible but ever-present and worrisome.
JDRF is a research organization committed to making the everyday lives of those with T1D better, mitigating the long-term effects of the disease, and most importantly, finding a CURE.
Please support Charlotte and our family by joining Charlotte's Champions the day of the walk and/or by donating! We plan to have a blast at the walk and celebrate life, community, family, and our girl!
Join us for birthday cake at our Charlotte's Champions table or tent! No gifts, please, she’ll have an official b-day party later, but donations to the JDRF walk are most welcome.
Joining Charlotte's Champions is simple, just click on the Join Our Team link and help us walk and fundraise for a cure!
