Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes/Dance to Beat Diabetes Zumbathon fundraising page!
On June 17th of this year, my three year old son Ethan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. We didn't know the warning signs of this disease. We thought diabetes was something caused by a poor diet that only older people could get. By the time we realized something was wrong, Ethan was in a life threatening state of Diabetic Ketoacidosis with blood sugar level of 1030. (Normal range is 95-101).
Ethan spent three days in the Pediatric ICU at Lehigh Valley Hospital having his blood sugar levels stabilized, and two additional days at the hospital learning how to take care of Ethan's condition.
If you are not familiar with Type 1 Diabetes, we continually monitor Ethan's blood sugar about six times a day, everyday to ensure that he is not too high or too low. We carefully manage his carb intake and activity level which can also impact his blood sugar levels. And, because Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disorder in which the pancreas no longer produce insulin, we give Ethan multiple daily injections of insulin. We do this all day, every day for his survival. Ethan has adjusted to life with Type 1 diabetes with such bravery. We have our ups and downs...he's three...but he is a very brave three year old. If he were a superhero we'd call him Ethan The Brave.
I've since learned that the number of healthy children with the sudden onset of Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is reaching epidemic levels. Infants, preschoolers, elementary school age children with no prior issues, are being diagnosed with T1D. Many parents do not realize their child is diabetic until they are in a life threatening state like my son was. I hope to share the warning signs of Type 1 Diabetes with more parents to help one family catch T1D before they are at risk.
How You Can Help
I'll be taking part in this year's Walk to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). To accomplish this, I am organizing a Zumbathon to benefit the JDRF which will be held at Outshine Dance & Fitness in Pottstown on Sunday, September 29th from 2pm - 4pm. The event is being hosted by myself and a fellow Zumba instructor who is also the mother of a child with T1D. We organize many Zumbathons to support a variety of wonderful charitable organizations. But this time, its personal.
The money I raise will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
About Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
Please support me and donate to my Zumbathon/Walk fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible today?
Thank you for your support!
