Welcome to my JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes personal fundraising page!
On October 10,2011, less than a month after her 4th birthday, Maggie's life changed forever with the diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. Since this day, Maggie has received thousands of finger pricks and injections and we have to carb count everything she eats. She receives a minimum of 4 injections each day of her life. At the age of six, Maggie knows the words pancreas, insulin, ketones, glucose meter, and glucagon.
Starting all day Kindergarten this year was a huge change. She needs to have her blood sugar checked before lunch each day, and insulin given after lunch. There is no full time nurse at her school, so we have to go for her lunch period every day.
She also has Selective Mutism and does not speak in school. This adds a lot more stress onto diabetes, since she will not tell her teacher when her sugar is low or she is not feeling well.
T1D is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, which the body needs to get energy from food. There is no known cause, it is not related to lifestyle or diet. Managing the disease requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure.
JDRF is working every day to change that. And, as the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research, every dollar JDRF directs toward its research plan comes from donors like you.
Please support my commitment and donate to my Walk fundraising efforts today. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease.
Thank you for your support!
