On April 27, 2014, my family and I will be walking in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. As you may know, on May 23, 2012, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I was 2 years old at the time of diagnosis.
In T1D, a person's pancreas stops producing insulin, which is essential to the body’s ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet or lifestyle. Managing T1D requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure.
As you can imagine, this has forever changed everyone in my family's lives. Many ask what it is like to be a child with type 1 diabetes. There are so many answers to that question. It is a disease that never goes away. It is a 24/7/365 job for my mom and dad. I get approximately 1,825 finger picks each year which are usually accompanied by 2,190 shots each year. My mom and dad constantly think about food, carbohydrates, and blood glucose levels.
Type 1 diabetes will not stand in my way of achieving any goals. This year I am going to play tee ball and get ready for kindergarten just like all my other friends.
We have formed our walk team, DrewKart Racers, in order to do two things: 1) raise money to support the research required to cure, treat and prevent T1D, and 2) provide support while managing this disease. (We are the DrewKart Racers because I LOVE Super Mario Borthers and MarioKart!)
We're helping JDRF create a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D) where no one has to fear developing this serious autoimmune disease. By joining our Walk to Cure Diabetes team and/or making a donation to JDRF, you can be part of the effort to improve the lives of millions of people affected by T1D.
JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. Every donation, big or small, from donors like you, allows JDRF to fund the critical research needed to find a cure.
We are actively recruiting anyone who would like to join us on our team and raise money in support of the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes.
Two small steps can make a BIG difference!
Make a generous contribution. Any amount is welcome. Online donations are safe and secure by clicking on the link below. However, if you prefer you can send us a check made out to JDRF. Please mail checks to:101 Ryan Dr.,Moosic,PA18507.
