Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes team page!
This is the page to donate in honor of team member Tyler. He was diagnosed on October 4th 2012. He was believed to have a stomach virus. He exhibited some of the classic signs of T1 which we were unaware of at the time. Weight loss, extreme thirst and fatigue. The doctors still insisted it was a stomach virus. On October 4th at 8:38 AM, he was rushed to his pediatrician where they tested him with a blood sugar off the charts. He was at risk for Diabetic Ketoacidosis. He was then rushed to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia at 11:39 AM. They put us into triage and shortly thereafter his diagnosis of T1D was confirmed. This disease is caused by the body attacking itself and rendering the beta cells unuseable. His body is no longer able to produce insulin. This isn't caused by lifestyle, this is caused by an autoimmune system going out of control. He is the team member you see post weather conditions everyday on the Facebook page Wyoming Valley PA Weather. He still lives a fairly normal life. But, the fact remains that everyday he must take a needle, multiple times every day. Since diagnosis, he has taken an estimated minimum of 4,380 injections and 5,150 fingerpricks. That estimate is based upon is sugar behaving normally. Stress, exercise and many other things can affect how many times he checks and doses. Even adults can get this disease. We are walking in honor of Tyler in order to live in a world where I don't have to watch my child stick a needle into his body every day. Many times when he sleeps, I am forced to get up and check his blood sugar to makie sure it is at an acceptable level for him to keep sleeping. If it is too low, I must wake him to eat or drink sugar containing items or else he will continue to drop and die. This is a situation which effects the entire family and which no family should have to go through. So, will you please consider a small donation and come walk with the whole team of Wyoming Valley PA Weather as we walk to a cure.
