Hello! This year, I'll be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $89 million.
Most of you know our story....Elliott our crazy, comical, caring 10 year old was diagosed with type 1 diabetes on Tuesday December 16, 2003....a day we will never forget! We became experts on the pancreas, carb counts, insulin shots and hypoglycemia very quickly. And I decided that I wanted to make a difference in a profound way...I was one day going to become a Diabets Educator...to help other families deal with the medical management of diabetes AND the emotional impact a chronic devastating disease can have on their child and their family. I am ALMOST done that journey. I am loving it and can't wait to make a difference. I will actually be graduating 2 weeks before the walk! BUT we are still fighting for a cure....because insulin is not a cure....it's merely life support. And the long term complications are still very real...and can be fatal. Being in the clincal setting I have seen how many people suffer from neuropathy, delayed wound healing, cardiac disease and glaucoma because of diabetes. Our biggest struggle right now is helping Elliott to comprehend that this is his life and being grateful for what he does have....but that's not so easy when you're ten and you are different from your friends.
There is some good news, though. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
