We will turn Type One into Type None

Welcome to the Carb-inators!!

Hello! I am Ethan Rowland. I have Type 1 Diabetes. I was diagnosed two years ago in fourth grade. The diagnosis surprised me, and because I didn’t know anything about diabetes, I was pretty scared too.

I am writing this letter because I would like to raise money to support JDRF, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, for T1D research. On May 3, I will be running a 5K in State College to support  JDRF.

T1D is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, which the body needs to get energy from food. Managing the disease requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on insulin. (I give myself injections.)

Whenever I am about to go play soccer, swim, or ride my bike, I have to eat snacks, or my blood sugars could go dangerously low. For sporting activities, it’s important for me to have a lunchbox full of juice boxes, Fig Newtons, and a blood glucose testing kit.

Over the past two years, I have learned a lot about diabetes, and I have gotten much more independent in taking care of myself. It hasn’t slowed me down. I currently play on a premier level soccer team called the Penn United Raptors. Some of my Raptor teammates will be running the 5K with me.  I enjoy running, and I swim on the Welch Swim Team in the summer. I also like to mountain bike and ski with my family.

It would be really cool if you would donate to my 5K team- The Carb-inators. We are registered as a walking team because the 5K doesn’t have a system for donations. My team fundraising goal is $2000. Thank you!
