My name is Jessica Marie Gutierrez. I am 26 years old years old. When I was just 7 years old I was diagnosed with epilepsy.
Just a year later I was taking a shower and called my mom in because I needed a towel. When my mom came in she had this look on her face, staring at me as I stood naked in the shower! I didn't know what was going on, and neither did my mom; but she was extremely scared, scared enough to take me to the hospital. Apparently I was nothing but skin and bones and so she knew something was not right! I was then diagnosed with Type I diabetes.
This diagnosis changed my life. It would rearrange how I would live on a daily bases with a potentially life threatening auto immune disease.
My mom now had to take me to CHOP (Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania) continuously every 3 months for annual checkups; sometimes even more frequent when we couldn't regulate my blood sugars. My whole family had to learn how to cope with living with my illness. My Mom needed to learn how to give me my insulin shots by practicing on oranges, and my siblings needed to learn signs and symptoms of low blood sugars and making sure I'd eat properly. (Good thing they love me so much). PLUS, we all had to deal with the seizures.
Having Type 1 diabetes was a struggle since the day I was diagnosed and has been still, for the last 17 years. It has never been controlled no matter what I do and no matter how many different doctors I see! It is so frustrating and sometimes I just break down because I can't take it anymore. I'm in pain everyday and most of it is due to complications caused of having this disease for 17 years of my life.
Diabetes hits people at different ages, at different paces, for some people it is not so bad. Unfortunately I am one of the less fortunate ones. Because I have been uncontrolled since my diagnosis I now have Neuropathy (nerve damage), Carpal Tunnel, and Fibromyalgia. All of which cause me constant everyday pain! So I also take a lot of medicine!
So now I see different people to help me manage my pain and find ways of coping with the pain to know how to live with all this everyday of my life.
I am now working to be an advocate and joind JDRF's Young Leadership Committee
I started my team two years ago and we had so much fun! My team is called Team Guti. So come lose some booty for Guti :)
You can donate, you can come walk beside me, or you can do both!! Any amount of donation is greatly appreciated and one step closer to helping find a cure! And having people support me by walking with me means a lot to me. I hope to have a bigger team this year to lose some booty for Guti. I also hope to beat what I raised last year, $600!
