Hi! I'm Sue Cracha-Carvalho and I'm the team captain! I am very passionate about this organization because my youngest daughter, Samantha, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in Jan 2008, at the age of 9 years old.
I didn't know anything about Diabetes when she was diagnosed, but I have learned a lot! There are different types of diabetes. The most common form is Type 2, which usually affects adults. It can be managed thru diet, exercise, taking a "pill" and occasionally checking your blood sugar with a glucose monitor. Approximately 95% of adults with diabetes have this type of diabetes. However, Type 1 Diabetes is much more serious and it only affects 5% of the people who have diabetes and usually it is diagnosed in children.
Type 1 Diabetes is "insulin dependent". What does this mean? Well, basically it means that my daughter needs to check her blood sugar with a monitor 5-8 times a day! Basically she checks every morning, before every meal, before/after exercise, before bedtime, and at 3am, every night!
In addition to checking blood sugars, we have learned a lot about nutrition, and how to count carbohydrates, fats, etc.. in order to try to calculate how much insulin should be delivered to her body. If we make a mistake, it could be fatal!
Type 1 Diabetes has definitely been a life changer for me and my family and the JDRF is conducting some great research to Cure, Treat and Prevent Diabetes. For more information on Research initiatives, click here: http://jdrf.org/research/
I have heard so many stories of children dying in their sleep because they were away at college and forgot to check their blood sugars! I want my daughter, other children and adults who are living with Type 1 Diabetes to live a normal life and to be able to SLEEP safely!
Please support me to raise awareness for Type 1 Diabetes and the JDRF!
