Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Page! We are taking the steps to help achieve JDRF's mission: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease where a person's pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables the body to get energy from food. The onset of T1D has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle - the cause is unknown. Currently there is no way to prevent or cure the disease.
A person with T1D must manage the disease by checking their blood sugar mutliple times a day which involves pricking their fingers for drops of blood. They must count the carbohydrates in everything they eat and drink and inject insulin via needles or an insulin pump. So many other things can also also effect their blood sugar like exercise and illness. There is also the threat of devestating complications.
In 2011, our son Ethan was diagnosed with T1D. It was the most difficult day of all our lives and the road since then has not always been easy but we are happy to say that Ethan is doing well today thanks to the many advances in the management and treatment of the disease. But there is definitely room for improvement and there is nothing more we would like than a CURE! This is why we walk and will keep walking!
The money our JDRF Walk Team raises will go directly to support this life-changing research.
The JDRF Walk is a fantastic way to make a difference in the millions of lives of people affected by type 1 diabetes. For at least that one day, they will look around and see all the support they have from their friends, family and community. On Walk Day, everyone can have fun and celebrate how much closer to a cure we are because of their efforts.
To make a team donation, click on the "Donate" button at the top of this page - no amount is too small and every penny is so greatly appreciated! If you'ld like to join our team, click the join team link below or consider coming out and walking with us!
