Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page! Skye and I will be taking part in this year?s Walk to raise funds to improve the lives of all people affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D).
This is a cause that is very close to my heart. The son of one of my closest friends was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was three years old. He is just about a year older than Skye. I have watched (and am watching) Jonathan grow up to be an intelligent, compassionate, responsible, and charismatic young man and as much as I empathize I will never fully understand the daily struggle that he and his family face in trying to manage his condition.
I've watched his mom Paula as she diligently works with Jonathan to check his blood sugar level, make healthy food choices, and calculate the amount of carbohydrates in Jonathan's meals to determine the most appropriate insulin dosages. As a mom I know how tough it is to convince your child at a routine doctor's visit that getting this immunization shot or blood test is necessary to keep you healthy - I can't imagine doing this several times a day with a child! But Jonathan is a trooper! He is a very happy child. He's great at sports and participates in basketball and football leagues and he just enjoys life in general. He's a leader - always volunteering at school to serve his classmates in leadership positions. I am so proud of him!
Just three weeks ago Jonathan was admitted to the hospital due to a crisis he experienced in controlling his blood sugar level. This is the first overnight hospital stay that he's had since he was diagnosed 8 years ago. I'm glad that he has recovered and is doing well now but wouldn't it be wonderful if we could find a cure for this disease so that children like Jonathan (and adults as well) could enjoy life without the effects of this life-threatening disease?
I would like to raise $100 this week towards a cure for Type I Diabetes - please join with me in this cause. Every little bit will help!
