Hello! This year, Team Flinn will be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $89 million. This will be Team Flinn's 6th year participating in the Walk to Cure Type 1 Diabetes.
Type 1, or Juvenile Diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children. As many of our friends and family know, we have been dealing with this devastating disease for six years. Our two middle children McClain and Sydney are both Type 1 diabetics. This disease has forever changed the dynamics of everyday life, not only for us but everyone around us. Our lives are filled with many daily challenges. We must be prepared at all times with our diabetes supplies... a meter, insulin, needles, juice boxes, glucose tablets, glucagon, ketone strips-NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!!!! These supplies are their lifeline, without them they cannot survive. Getting prepared for school and any event is a challenge. We must be always be organized and prepared for the unknown. As parents, we struggle with the battle of allowing our children to be just that children. They want to play with friends, go to their house, have sleepovers-it is a struggle to let go. The worries forever fill our minds...will they be OK, will they make good food choices, will they remember to take their insulin, will it be the correct amount, what if they go low or high-the worries are many, and with a snap of a finger any complication could change their lives forever. A simple illness has sent them to the hospital for a week long stay. A minor cut may take 2 weeks to heal. As if parenting is not difficult enough, diabetes triples the challenge. As you can imagine every single moment of every single day presents us with worry and uncertainty. We have taught McClain and Sydney to be independent and responsible for their illness, as it will be a lifelong challenge for them. They have learned to check their own blood sugars 7-8 times per day, calculate their carbohydrates, and inject their insulin. They have learned to make good food choices and manage their diabetes. They visit an endocrinologist every 3 months to manage their diabetes and make insulin adjustments. We are so proud of McClain and Sydney for battling each and every day. Their fearlessness, determination and strong will shall carry them far in life. They are not only leaders in school but also on the athletic field. We could not be prouder of our children for their strength.
Through it all Sydney & McClain continue make the best of their illness, they are the two BRAVEST people that we know. They are courageous leaders and speak about their diabetes, and educate their peers. They are great students, athletes, and leaders. They are AMAZING and STRONG! They both accomplish everything they put their minds to. We are so proud and lucky to be their parents.
Diabetes is a challenging illness, each day we are faced with new obstacles that we need to overcome. Diabetes has made our job as parents so difficult that it is often hard to hold back the tears. The feeling of being helpless and out of control makes it difficult to not only hold back the tears, but get through the day. There is some good news, though. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more Type 1 Diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure. We ask that you join Team Flinn and help us along our journey.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference in McClain and Sydney's lives. We invite you to visit our team page, personal page and video link for our upcoming 2013 Walk To Cure Diabetes. Won't you please join Team Flinn and give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
