Team Beta

We will turn Type One into Type None

Our team is dedicated to all who have type 1 diabetes but our team is in honor of Justin and his dad Fred. This year Justin is serving as the JDRF Ambassador for the local walk.  It has been rewarding to hear the support from local groups but the worst part of the job has been 'welcoming' new teams, as it almost always involves someone being newly diagnosed with T1D.  While it is sad to meet these families, it reminds us of the importance of the JDRF walk!  The advances in diabetes research are exciting and we are getting close to the ultimate goal of a cure.  What is needed is funding for the research groups, and this is the reason for our walk!

Fred was diagnosed at age 13 and Justin at 31 years.  This year marked 53 years that Fred has lived with diabetes! He has also made it his life's work treating people with diabetes as an endrocrinologist.

They are both inspirations not only to our families but to everyone who knows them.  Living with diabetes is a huge challenge every day. Imagine having to calculate and deliver an insulin dose every single time you eat something! The balance they must maintain with exercise or a simple cold can be very complicated. Remembering to take off your pump before swimming. And always carrying the necessary items when you leave the house such as a glucometer, a bag of candy and a glucagon pen is a way of life.

Even though they take amazing care of themselves and are very good at managing their disease, we still worry when we are not with them. A sugar low is very scary when they are alone.

We are taking steps to help JDRF achieve its goal of improving the lives of all people affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D) by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing and better treating T1D.

Our family has been involved with local JDRF fundraisers since we moved to Sioux Falls.  The first bike-a-thons were held in front of the old Central Plain Clinic.  Two years ago, the halls of the Empire Mall were full with all the walkers raising money for T1D research.  Again this year, we are excited to hold the event at the Sanford Research Center...if you aren't aware of the progress being made on the research front, we would love to have you join us for the walk.  It is an exciting time for diabetes research and fundraisers such as our walk are key to accelerating the race for a cure.

We greatly appreciate your support of Team Beta.  It is important and rewarding to work in support of the cause of curing and better treating T1D, but the support we get from friends and family in support of our team is equally meaningful.  It is touching to have the generous support from so many friends and family!  Thank you for any donations and we would love to see you come to the walk.   We would love to thank you personally and we are confident you will be impressed with the number of individuals being helped by your donations!

Will you accept the challenge to make a difference by walking with us? All we need you to do is click on the "Join this Team" button, make a donation, and begin fundraising. It’s simple, fast, and fun!

Thank you for your support, and we’ll see you on Walk day!
