Dear Friends and Family,
Hello! I hope this letter finds you all doing well and anticipating a wonderful fall season! I’m writing to ask for your support of this year’s JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes! This year’s walk will take place on Saturday, September 28th at Bicentennial Capitol Mall.
As most of you know, Jake and I live with type 1 diabetes (T1D). T1D is an autoimmune disease where, for reasons unknown, the immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, living someone insulin dependent for life.
Though Jake and I make managing diabetes look easy, especially Jake - scoring all of those touchdowns...It's not!! This disease is really difficult to live with on a daily basis. The finger pricks, insulin pump, shots, carbohydrate counting, and high and low blood sugars are compounded by the emotional toll of living with a chronic disease.
However, here’s the exciting part – JDRF is working toward curing, treating, and preventing T1D. They are the largest non-government funder of T1D research and research-related education. In a typical year, over 80 cents of every dollar donated to JDRF will go directly toward funding this mission. I am pleased to share with you the following research highlights that have taken place within the last year:
- Artificial pancreas systems will eliminate blood glucose testing and carb counting by totally automating insulin dosing, initially preventing dangerous low blood sugars and eventually ensuring ideal glucose control.
- JDRF’s encapsulation research will restore insulin independence for 18 months to two years by implanting newly created beta cells into a protective capsule, which eliminates the need for toxic immune suppression therapies.
As you can see, JDRF has made great strides but there is still work to do.
So how can you help to find a cure, help with further treatments so that people can live healthier lives, and help us prevent T1D?

Thank you so much for supporting our family and helping JDRF find a cure!
