Welcome to Daniel's Army's JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!
My family and myself will be taking part in this year's Walk to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
We are doing this in honor of my brother Daniel. Who as you all know passed away February 5, 2013 of Diabetic Ketoacidosis. Daniel always said, "Someday there will be a cure." He is right we just have to join together, and make that happen! Daniel was only 13 years old when he passed away suddendly in his sleep. He was always making jokes, telling silly stories, playing video games on his Xbox, working on the farm with hogs and cows, playing with his dog, Sid, just being a normal 13 year old boy.
Until it came time to eat or drink something. Daniel had to prick his finger not once or twice a day but at least five to six times a day; not only when he ate or drank something but at all times of the day his blood sugar had to be monitored at all times. His pancreas did not produce insulin, so when he ate he had to take a shot of insilin afterwards. Daniel was a master a hiding how he felt, not about his Diabetes he was very open about his dislike of it, but if he felt well or not. Most of the time he did not feel well, and he would cover it up with a joke or funny story.
JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
Even if you never knew Daniel personally, but knew his mom, Jennifer, or his dad, Dan, or his older sister, Kaitlyn, join us! We are doing this walk in honor of Daniel and his shortly lived life. Even though Daniel has is made up in Heaven now, diabetes free! There are still children all around who are having to deal with Type 1 Diabetes. If we can stop at least one family from having to go through the loss of losing a child and sibling our mission will be complete. So let's raise some money for JDRF, and their wonderful cause in honor of a beautiful young man who left this Earth way too soon!
