I'll never forget the day Genna was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. As I was about to give her her third shot of the day, she looked up at me with tears streaming down her face and asked "how long do I have to do this for?". My heart sank. How do you tell a six year old that they might have to give themselves 6 shots and prick themselves 6 times daily every day for the rest of their life? That's everyday. No holidays. No breaks. No exceptions. How do you tell a now 9 year old how important it is to manage their blood sugar levels because they are at a high risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, blindness, or worse? What do I tell myself every night when I go in and check on her, and every morning so relieved to see her open her brown eyes? What can we say? What can we possibly say?
That there IS hope. There WILL be a cure. She WON'T have to live with this her whole life. She won't face a lifetime of potential health problems. She won't have to prick her finger 6 times a day for the rest of her life. She won't have to stress out every time she has to change her insulin pump. She CAN forget how many carbs in a piece of bread.
JDRF is making this happen. Right now. By accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D. By joining our Walk Team and making a donation, you will be helping us to raise funds to directly support research with the greatest potential to conquer this disease.
We are motivated by the courage and perseverance of those facing the everyday challenges of type 1 diabetes - they are the reason we challenge ourselves to give more, to do more, to achieve more. We challenge ourselves to make a real difference in the lives of those with T1D.
We would love it if you could join our team and show Genna how much support and love is surrounding her. If you can't make it to walk day, please consider making a donation on her behalf.
3,000,000 adults and children in the United States have type 1 diabetes. Genna is our #1.
Thank you so much!!!
