On September 28th, I'll be taking part in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic plan to fight type 1 diabetes (T1D). They'll do that by progressively removing the impact of T1D from people's lives until it is no longer a threat to anyone. I'm asking you to help support my fundraising efforts with a tax-deductible gift that will help make a difference in the lives of the millions of people with T1D.
As a secondary caregiver to Dustin Davis, a 10 year old with juvenile onset of Type 1 Diabetes, my reason for this request goes beyond helping a larger cause. This research helps those I care most about in a much larger way. When Dustin was diagnosed at 4 years old with Type 1 Diabetes his insulin was injected by needle 4-5 times a day. With the research funds raised by events like this, Dustin now has a wireless insulin pod that attaches to his arm, inserting a catheter to distribute his insulin over the course of 2-3 days. Far less painful than multiple needles a day and the strenuous task of measuring insulin manually.
T1D's onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle, and there is nothing you can do to prevent it. At present, there is also nothing you can do to get rid of it. People with T1D must manage the disease by injecting or pumping insulin several times a day, every day. Insulin is not a cure, and it does not prevent the possibility of serious complications like kidney failure, blindness, and stroke.
This disease has been a member of Dustin’s family for 6 years and counting. It will never go on vacation unless they are. It will never go away to college until it goes with Dustin. And in 40 years Dustin will never be able to enjoy being an “empty nester” when his kids go off to college. His T1D is his right arm, his left leg, and every fingertip until the day we find a cure.
That's why I walk with JDRF - to help them fund research to discover, develop, and deliver new drugs and devices that cure, better treat, and prevent T1D.
Please consider donating to our team – your dollar helps kids like Dustin look forward to a better future free of diabetes.
