Welcome to our personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!
January 27, 2013 is a day our family will never forget! I knew by watching the symptoms that my grandmother had with Type 2 diabetes what Miles was going through but I couldn’t believe it. Then the dreaded words from the doctor, "Mam we are calling for an ambulance to transport Miles to Vanderbilt so they can get his diabetes under control and get your family educated on how to take care of your son" Me-"What, he has diabetes?, no not my baby!" I left the room and cried, pulled myself together and started this journey to find a cure for my Miles! Oh the things that you think you could never do! I never would have thought that Miles would be where he is today! He checks his blood sugar, counts carbohydrates, and yes, he can give himself a shot! He amazes me every day with how he handles being diabetic!
We sat in the hospital thinking of how drastically his life was going to change, asking ourselves a thousand questions We spent the next day with Dr. Simmons and all the wonderful nurses. We took in all the information and then they sent us home. Home? Already? I felt like I had just brought home my first child because I did not feel like I was prepared to take all this on. But, we bucked up and did it! All those things we thought would change for him, no way! He still gets to eat his chocolate, yes chocolate! He loves to fish, swim, and the one thing he thought he would never get to do again, spend the night with his best buddy Timothy, he spends the night on a regular basis! He says he just wants to be normal. So normal he is. He loves to fish, hunt, swim, skeet shoot, and play baseball. He can do anything he puts his mind to!
Our family will be taking part in this year's Walk to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money we raise will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you. We are very blessed to have JDFR support diabetes research.
