My granddaughter, Aly is 13 years old and was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on March 10, 2010. Since then she has had to prick her fingers 8-10 times a day to test her blood sugar and is attached to an insulin pump 24/7. All of her food has to be weighed, counted or measured before she can eat it and exercise has to be planned for. Even with all the planning there is no guarantees that someday she will not have to deal with the devastating complications that are associated with diabetes including blindness, stroke, amputations, heart disease and kidney failure.
