Dear Family and Friends,
Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!
I want to let each of you know that my family will be taking part in the annual Walk To Cure Diabetes on Saturday, October 5 at Shelby Farms Park. This will be our fifteenth year to participate. Currently I am sixteen years old but have been living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) since I was a baby. I have never known a life without it, but hope for and believe in a diabetes-free future.
I want you to know that type 1 diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar or from being overweight or from lack of exercise. It cannot be prevented and so far there is no cure. Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease in which the body's own immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing cells of the pancreas. In case you don't know, insulin is a necessary hormone that allows the cells in your body to utilize glucose as energy for fuel. People with T1D can no longer make insulin. The only way to take insulin is by injection or through an insulin pump. Without insulin, death is imminent. I have been wearing an insulin pump for most of my life. It has become my life support system. Sadly, insulin is not a cure and it does not prevent the devastating complications often associated with diabetes, such as kidney failure, blindness, neuropathy, heart attack, stroke and other circulatory dysfunction.
Does the number 43,000 mean anything to you? It does to me...this is approximately how many times I have had to test my blood sugar since I was diagnosed. I test my blood sugar approximately 6-10 times every single day. The only way to know how much insulin I need is to test my blood sugar often and to keep track of the carbohydrates I am eating. My pump delivers insulin based on my actual blood sugar level and on the number of carbohydrate grams I eat at each meal. ALL carbs impact blood sugar levels including, cereal, bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, fruit, milk products and even some vegetables...the list is endless. Even many "sugar free" items contain carbs and can elevate my blood sugar. It's a lot to keep up with from day to day.
There has be a better, easier, and healthier way for me to live. The only logical solution is a CURE. Please support me and donate to my Walk fundraising campaign. Your tax-deductible donation will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease.
Thank you for your support!
