Hi everyone and welcome to my Wyatt Parker Wacky Pedestrians JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Page! This is now my third year participating in this fantastic event.
As you may remember, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) on Feb 14, 2011. I can barely remember the days when I wasn't checking my blood sugar every few hours and getting insulin injections. For the past 2 years, I've been using the insulin pump which has been a huge help. The pump is a little computer the size of a cell phone that holds my insulin and automatically sends the right amount into my body with just a few numbers inputted. No more 4-5 injections a day. (Big ouch!!) But this year, I also got a Blood-Glucose monitor! This is another little computer I carry on my waist (next to the insulin pump) that tracks my blood sugar realtime. Without having to actually prick my finger for blood (another ouch!!), I know if I'm at risk of my blood sugar getting into a danger zone.
The insulin pump and BG monitor has made my diabetes management easier for not just me or even Mom and Dad, but for the coaches, teachers and friend's parents who I'm with when Mom and Dad are not around. But while it makes things easier, living with diabetes challenges me in everything I do. I have to get woken up at 2am to drink juice when my blood sugar is low. I still have to make sure I'm eating plenty of snacks during the football practice so I wont go low. I have to count the carbs I eat at EVERY meal EVERY day. Maybe one day the scientists will discover new medicine or design new devices so that I dont have to think about it all the time. That's why I walk for JDRF! Yes, the pump has made life much easier and that technology was developed through the research programs and funding supported by the JDRF.
I don't know if they will ever find a cure. But JDRF helps all the doctors find better ways to treat and prevent T1D... and maybe actually discover a cure someday. Ahhh... to eat all the pizza I want without worrying about keytones!
I would really appreciate any help you can give me in reaching my goal this year. All I need you to do is click on the "Join this Team" button. And if you can, I would love to have as many friends and family come out and walk with me. For anyone in Austin, we walk at the Domain on Sunday morning, Oct. 27.
Thank you all for your thoughts and continued support!! Love, Wyatt (& Mom, Dad and Nash)
