Dearest Family & Friends,
Please join us in supporting Michael Austin and our quest for a Miracle, a CURE for Type 1 Diabetes, by joining our walk team on OCTOBER 27th, 2013, at the DOMAIN, in Austin, at 11:00am. Our team, Michael Austin’s Miracle, will unite again and we would love to have you marching with us. Your presence will honor Michael Austin’s daily battle with this disease as well as the outstanding support and patience he receives from his big sister, Genevieve. These kids are quite a team!
About 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes each year. This is an auto immune disease that is not caused by an unhealthy lifestyle or poor food choices. The immune system attacks the pancreas. This disease requires vigilant management with insulin and finger sticks 24 hours a day, including overnight. Michael Austin has his finger poked to check his blood sugar 8-10 times per day. He now wears an insulin pump 24 hours a day, which means he has a fanny pack holding a machine and 18 inches of plastic tubing attached to a 6mm catheter under his skin at all times. It is his life support system. We change his “infusion site” every 48 hours, and it’s a big needle, requiring tremendous bravery. Before his pump, he had 4-5 insulin shots each day, every time he ate. When diabetic kids get sick (cold, infection, flu) it’s an even more intensive management process and we try like crazy to keep him out of the hospital. It’s a constant balancing act and he never gets a break.
Michael Austin was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on March 19, 2013, when he was 2 ½ years old. Since then, he has had his fingers poked about 5,400 times, had about 900 shots of insulin, and about 140 infusion site changes. BUT he is PROUD, and DETERMINED. There is hope for a CURE for diabetes and supporting the JDRF is how it can be done. The JDRF currently supports 58 clinical trials and over 80% of donations go directly toward research for a CURE! Diabetes experts report that a cure is attainable in his lifetime, given the proper research.
Our family follows a Christian faith and last Easter Michael Austin (age 3) had many questions for us about death, resurrection, and heaven. I explained heaven as the time when we get to live in a perfect world with Jesus where there is only happiness, no sickness or suffering. Michael Austin thought about it for a few moments then said, “Mama, when I get to heaven, will Jesus take my pump away? And that means no more diabetes in heaven?” My eyes filled with tears, my heart swelled, and I vowed silently at that moment to do everything possible to take that pump away before he gets to heaven. The JDRF is our fastest path. Won’t you join us in fighting for Michael Austin’s Miracle??
