Once again, we are supporting our good friend Reid and his team - the Jedi Knights - in the Walk to Cure Diabetes. Below is a note written by his family and instead of trying to summarize it, I thought sharing these thoughts directly would be the most powerful motivation for your support. Thanks in advance for whatever you can do to help!
Note from Reid's mom, Carolyn:
Reid's Jedi Knights are back! On October 28 our family will walk in JDRF's 2012 Walk to Cure Diabetes. Every year there are more and more advancements that are improving treatments and getting us closer to a cure. As Jedi Knights our motto is, "May the Cure Be With You."
Type 1 diabetes, or T1D, is a disease that Reid has lived with for over three years. Living with T1D is not easy. Reid tests his blood sugar at least 7 times a day and he wears an insulin pump to deliver insulin. Our family spends a lot of time thinking about blood sugars, carbohydrates, ketones, glucagon and more! It's enough to make your head spin!
Things that are commonplace for many American 8 year old boys, like having a sleepover at friend's house, aren't so easy for us. We're grateful to have friends who volunteer to wake up at 2am to test Reid's blood sugar while he's at their house for a sleepover!
When most of us get a fever we head to bed until it passes. For Reid, a sick day is quite complex and requires strict monitoring as his blood sugar soars into high levels that can cause ketones and other negative consequences.
Our hope is that one day very soon Reid will be able to live without having to constantly think about diabetes and its effects.
The good news is that JDRF is funding groundbreaking research which will help Reid and millions of others with better treatments and a cure.
Now, more than ever, you can make a difference. We hope those of you in Austin will consider walking with us on October 28th. For those of you far away we hope you'll consider making a donation to JDRF in honor of Reid's Jedi Knights. Together, we can make the cure a reality!
