Welcome to team Luke's Sky Walkers JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!
My name is Luke, I am 5 years old and have Type 1 diabetes. I found out that I had diabetes in August of 2012. I had to go potty a lot, and was very thirsty. My life is very different now, compared to this time last year. It breaks Mommy & Daddy's heart, because I remember when I was not a diabetic. So far this year I have had my finger "poked" to check my blood sugar 4,000 times! I have had 1,350 injections of insulin, I really hate that part! In April of this year I got an insulin pump. I was so very excited when the mail man delivered it to my door step!! This was a very happy day. I was thrilled that I did not have to get as many shots now. I also have a continious glucose monitor (CGM). This helps my Mommy and Daddy to see trends in my blood sugar and make adjustments to my insulin dose. I wear both my pump and CGM (I named "Lenny") 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Diabetes NEVER takes a break!
On the outside you would never know I have diabetes. I like to play with friends, and have fun like every 5 year old. I really don't talk about my diabetes very much, but I will if you ask me a question. I don't like to let it get me down, but sometimes that is hard. Daddy and Mommy tell me I am very brave and they are proud of me. I love them.
Please come walk with me:)
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
