Hello friends and family members!
This year, my family and I will be taking part for the fourth time in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with 600,000 other walkers across the country. This year's Walk has a circus theme, and I am already contemplating what I am going to wear. Last year family teams like ours raised more than $36 million to fuel research for a cure for juvenile diabetes.
Juvenile, or type 1, diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, many of them beginning when they were children. My uncle was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when he was 13. I was diagnosed with it in February, 2010, when I was six.
Since then I have had to test my blood sugar by pricking my finger six to eight times a day. I have had to keep track of every carbohydrate that I eat, and my mom or the school nurse has had to give me an insulin shot before every meal. They have already given me more than 4,000 shots. The toll that this disease has taken on our family alone has been great, and many more children are diagnosed with juvenile diabetes every day.
There is some good news, though. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide, and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure. Since it was founded in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.6 billion to type 1 diabetes research.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Please give to JDRF as generously as possible in support of this year's Walk. Also, consider joining the Hlavinka McIntyre Family team at Reliant Stadium at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 26th, and asking your friends to sponsor your participation in the Walk. Together, we can make the cure a reality!
