Hello! It's Walk time again! Once again, in 2013, I'll be taking part as a Team Captain in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to raise money for diabetes research.
Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children. In recent years, more and more adults are also being diagnosed and unfortunately doctors do not know why.
On a personal note, I have also recently joined the Board of Directors of JDRF. This cause, as you all know, took on special meaning for me when my 24 year old son William, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in December of 2010. I cannot believe it has been almost 3 years. What a complete shock back then when I got the news that William, who was in his last year of school at The University of Texas, had Type 1 diabetes. Since that time he has had to prick his fingers on an average of 10 - 13 times per day, giving himself numerous insulin shots daily. However, William has learned to deal with this illness and I have yet to hear him ever say "why me". He has since graduated and is working in Austin, Texas. Unfortunately, it took something like this to push me to do more for this great foundation. I'd personally like to thank all the volunteers who do so much and who give so much of their time.
There is continuing good news about Type 1 diabetes research. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure. I am committed to help!
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. I know most of you heard from me last year and the year before and I appreciate so much your contributions. I would again ask you to please give to JDRF as generously as possible and consider joining The Walk. Together, we can make the cure a reality!
