Thank you so much for clicking the link to my fundraising page!
I would love for you to join our team, help us raise money, come have fun at the walk, make a donation of ANY size, and be a part of the cure.
Last year, due to the incredible generosity of our friends, family, neighbors, and teammates, the Hlavinka McIntyre Family Team raised OVER $25,000 for research. What can I say? You guys are awesome. Thank you so much !!
The JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes this year is on Saturday October 26th, 2013 and I will be there at 7:30am when the gates open with plenty of Starbucks coffee for all under our Hlavinka McIntyre Family Team banner. The walk itself begins at 9am on the Reliant Park grounds. Bring your family for karaoke, free food, music, entertainment and community.
Walter has Type 1 diabetes which is an auto-immune disorder that one does not "grow out of". As long as Walter is alive he will have type 1 diabetes. He pricks himself to check his sugar around ten times a day and since his body makes no insulin he takes insulin injections before eating to help his body use carbs for energy. It is very hard to get it all "right" but we try! If he gets too much insulin he can go too "low" and have a seizure or die and if he doesn't get enough insulin his sugar will be too high which wreaks havoc on eyes and kidneys. He did not get Type 1 diabetes at age 7 from eating too many Snickers bars and now that he is 11 eating raw cauliflower and beef jerky for a snack and exercising all the time is likewise not making it go away!
I absolutely hate watching my kid deal with diabetes and am desperate for a cure. The March of Dimes (along with the NIH) paid for Jonas Salk's lab and eradicated polio, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is helping scientists to meet the goal of eradicating diabetes. It can be done. There are many promising paths to pursue.
Insulin keeps these kids alive but it is not a cure.
Please, Please give generously to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in the hope that better treatments and a CURE can be found in Walter's lifetime. Thanks again for your consideration and we hope to see you at the walk!
Sincerely, Rebecca Hlavinka
