Welcome to our personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!
Last year Matthew's life changed forever. On November 13th, he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Ironically 1 day before World Diabetes Day. It has been an incredibly hard adjustment but we are coping now with our new 'normal'. Every day is different. We have good days and bad days. There is no 'getting better'. We manage T1D 24/7 to the best of our ability, but it is relentless and we have many sleepless nights.
We hope that you feel able to help Matthew & all others that have this terrible disease by supporting us & JDRF. Committed to finding a cure.
**Update November 8 - we are now just 5 days away from the 1 year anniversary of his diagnosis of T1D. Ironically 1 day before World Diabetes Day. To mark this anniversary on such a poignant date, I am hosting a tea/coffee morning at my home on November 14th. Anytime between 10am and 2pm. I will be selling cookies also. A cream tea will be offered for a minimum donation of $6 per person. All donations received will go to JDRF via our fundraising page. You can either pay online here or bring cash/check on the day. Check made payable to JDRF. Thank you
*Update October - almost 11 months post diagnosis. Matthew has done approximately 3300 finger pricks to test his blood sugar. Approximately 80 painful insulin pump infusion set changes. He also has a CGM now which monitors his blood sugar every 5 minutes to allow us to keep tighter control. He's done about 14 changes of this. All involve needles. Matthew used to hate needles ! He still doesn't like them, but they are an every day fact of life now*
Below is some more information on T1D:
We'll be taking part in this year's Walk to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money we raise will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
Please support us and donate to our Walk fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for Matthew & the millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible today?
Thank you for your support!
