Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes team page!
Many of you know my daughter Jaci was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in February 2013. In these few short months since her diagnosis, she has pricked her fingers more than 800 times to check her blood sugars and has received over 200 injections of life-saving insulin. She is now on an insulin pump, which allows her to eat more like a regular kid (which makes her extremely happy). She still has to be careful about what she eats, but her menu options have expanded greatly. The pump is a great option for her, but she still has to get poked several times a day to monitor her blood sugars, and change out the system that connects the pump to her body at least every three days.
Type 1 diabetes is a 24/7/365 disease – not only do I check her blood sugar during the day, I also get up at least once every night around 2AM to check her blood sugar and give her carbs or insulin (if needed). One night recently, I woke up every single hour to check her blood sugar because she was high and I wanted to make sure the proper actions were taken to bring her down to normal levels.
Diabetes is our new reality. It means counting every carb she eats, and planning every bite in advance. Doing all the right things, and feeling frustrated when things don't work the way you expected. But through it all, she has been my hero. She is adapting better than any 9-year-old should have to, and she is amazing!
We're taking steps to help JDRF progressively remove the impact of type 1 diabetes (T1D) from people's lives until no one has to fear developing this disease. By joining our Walk to Cure Diabetes team and making a donation to JDRF, you'll raise money to help fund critical T1D research and create a world without T1D. JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. Every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
Will you accept the challenge to make a difference by walking with us? Just click on the "Join this Team" button, make a donation, and start fundraising.
Thank you for your support, and we'll see you on Walk day!
