This will be our tenth year for our family team to walk to raise money to cure type 1 diabetes. We do it because it must be done and we will succeed because of family and friends like you. We will never forget your support. Please know that you are part of the cure. It is because of your support and generousity that we will one day live in a time when the millions of children and adults will no longer suffer the terrible consequences of this disease.
As you know, type 1 diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children.
There is some good news, though. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
Chris was diagnosed on April 9, 2002 at age 10. Since then, he has never lived one minute when we, his parents, and he didn't have to think about diabetes. It never lets up. Every bite of food, physical activity, illness, stress, fatigue, bedtime, sleep, and simply the passage of a few hours requires Chris (and us) to think of his diabetes and attempt to control his blood sugar day and night. Yes, even just sleeping is a challenge and dangerous. Can you imagine going to bed always wondering if you will wake up? We have seen it in person. Before going to sleep, Chris has asked us in the past when we were going to check his blood sugar. We feel blessed that we have always been able to get up every two hours throughout every single night and check his blood sugar, because it took at least a little of his fear away and reduced the chances that he would go low and die in his sleep. We formed our JDRF family walk team, Chris's Crusaders, to help raise funds for type 1 diabetes. This will be our 11th year to raise funds and 10th year to walk.
YOU have made a difference because every dollar may be THE dollar that brings a cure. As we said, your help is appreciated far more than we can ever express but know that your dollars very well could save the lives of millions. It could be your child, grandchild, or those who have yet to be born. Type 1 strikes anyone at any time without regard to lifestyle, diet or exercise. It causes blindness, kidney failure, amputations, heart attacks and strokes. It shortens lives. If each mother and father had to spend one week living with, and caring for, a child with diabetes, we would raise millions of dollars without effort. We pray that never happens to any other person. We depend on YOU to help us cure this terrible disease that affects Chris and millions of others, and you come through. No one, especially children, should have to live their lives with diabetes.
