DARE 2 HOPE!
My name is Shelbe Riley and I sending you this invitation on behalf of my daughter, Paige.
Paige was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on Sep 11, 2008. That was a day our family will never forget.
I remember thinking, “OK, it’s a bump in the road, but we will tackle it head on. I won’t let it be a problem.”
Little did I know what was in store for Paige and for our family.
For those of you who are parents, I want you to remember that first time when your baby slept through the entire night. Remember your sense of panic as you went racing to the room to make sure your precious child was breathing?
Now, replay that night, each and every night for the rest of your life. This is what being a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes is like. It doesn’t matter if you have a young child or a grown child, you worry.
You worry about what they eat. When they eat. How much they exercise, and the unseen toll each high or low blood sugar reading takes on their body.
But there is hope and...that hope is JDRF.
Hope! for an end to this disease. Until there is a cure, they are with us every step of the way.
Greeting us with a bag of hope at diagnosis; informing us of the latest breakthroughs in medicine and technology; connecting! us with other parents and children impacted by this disease and NEVER! giving up their relentless pursuit
of a cure.
I’m happy to share since I last reached out to you:
1. Phase 3 clinical trials on the first generation of the Artificial Pancreas are coming to an end, bringing this technology one step closer to the marketplace
2 Outpatient trials have begun on encapsulated beta cells that produce insulin for up to 24 months – you still have to check blood sugar levels, but don’t have to inject or pump insulin.
3. Clinical trials on glucose-responsive or “smart” insulin have begun
4. Screening for infants at high risk for developing type 1 diabetes and giving them a series of viral vaccines that train the body’s auto-immune system not! to attack beta cells is in early stages of development
5. And finally, scientists have perfected a therapy that allows the body to regenerate beta cells. While it is in its infancy, more testing is needed to refine this process before it is available to those with this disease.
Many breakthroughs, all on the horizon and all made possible because of PEOPLE like you! Today, you have a chance to join with JDRF to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes.
For Paige and for the 3 million people in the US with this disease and the millions more who love them.
Thank you for your gift of hope!
