Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes team page!
This year is a really special year and we've created a team with a special name. Team 4T1D!
You can read that name any way you'd like - 4T (forty) 1D or 4 (for) T1D - but either way it's my 40th birthday and all I want is for my friends and family to Walk with me and help raise money for a cure for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).
Here's the main information you need to know:
Event Date: Saturday, October 19th, 2013
Event Time: Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., 5K Run begins at 8:30 a.m. and the Walk begins at 9:30 a.m.
Where: SeaWorld San Antonio!
This year marks my 32nd year with T1D. I was diagnosed at seven years old. I did not get diabetes from eating too much sugar and I was not at all overweight at the time of my diagnosis. I was just a normal kid, enjoying summer camp whose immune system slowly and methodically rendered her pancreas pretty much useless.
My pancreas stopped producing insulin which is necessary to allow glucose from consumed food to enter the cells in the body and fuel and nourish that body. Without insulin, the body can actually enter a state of starvation. Simply put, my life changed drastically and I learned to give myself insulin shots, test my blood sugar several times a day and monitor every morsel of food that entered my mouth. One miscalculation or sick day and my blood glucose level could skyrocket or plummet leaving me feeling like I'd been hit by a train. Plus, even with the best control complications like vision impairment, kidney issues, circulatory issues and more are quite common.
With the funds raised by organizations like JDRF, my life has improved tremendously. I now wear an insulin pump and a Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS) that make those miscalculations easier to handle and even avoid. JDRF helped fund much of the research used to develop these products. Not too mention fast-acting insulin, more accurate blood glucose monitoring and care protocols that have tightened my control and increase the average lifespan of a person with T1D by over a decade.
This is why I'm asking you to join my team and help raise money to find a cure and help fund further cure therapeutics for myself and the millions living with and being diagnosed with this disease.
Will you accept the challenge to make a difference by walking with us? Just click on the "Join this Team" button, make a donation, and start fundraising. Even if you're not in San Antonio - you can help! Join the team and raise money by sending e-mails and posting to your Facebook and Twitter accounts. You CAN make a difference!
Thank you for your support, and we'll see you on Walk day - in person or online!
