Hello, this is our 4th year to participate in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes at the Virginia Beach, VA Oceanfront. We have formed the team Coastal Cruisers 4 Natalie's Cure to support our daughter, Natalie, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes a little over 3 years ago at the age of only 4. We are taking the steps to help achieve JDRF's mission: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
In the 3 years since Natalie's diagnosis, she has already received over 13,000 finger pricks and over 5,400 shots. That is a staggering amount of needle pokes for a little girl to endure. A year ago Natalie started wearing an insulin pump so rather than receiving a minimum of 5 shots a day, she now gets 1 shot every 2-3 days. She has had 120 pump site changes since starting on the pump. The pump gives her more flexibility and less needle pokes, but it is NOT a cure. She now must be attached to her pump 24 hours a day in order to stay alive. We closely monitor her diet, by counting every carbohydrate she eats and measuring and weighing her food. We must test Natalie's blood sugar levels at least 8-15 times a day by pricking her finger and program her carbs into her insulin pump every time she eats. Natalie has her finger pricked every time she eats, exercises, shows symptoms of having a high or low blood sugar, at bedtime, and even in the middle of the night when she is sleeping. Diabetes NEVER sleeps and NEVER takes a vacation. This will continue daily for the rest of her life unless a cure is found.
The JDRF Walk is a fantastic way to make a difference in the millions of lives of people affected by type 1 diabetes. For at least that one day, Natalie will look around and see all the support she has from her friends, family and community. On Walk Day, everyone can have fun and celebrate how much closer to a cure we are because of their efforts.
The money our JDRF Walk Team raises will go directly to support this life-changing research. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
