Dear Family & Friends,
For children like Parker, Diabetes is usually an auto-immune disease. When a person has an auto-immune disease, this means their body has turned against that system or organ, and is attacking it like it would a virus. For children with auto-immune T1D, their body has attacked the pancreas, leaving this vital organ dysfunctional and unable to fulfill its physiological duties within the body.
So what does this mean?
When your pancreas no longer functions properly, your body has to fight to function with extremely low and high amounts of glucose in the blood stream. While we can now stabilize and monitor these amounts with modern medicine, the bodily systems of these children (and adults) still have a hard time keeping their bodies functioning properly with altered glucose levels.
What are the results of a body off-track? Every day that Parker and others with T1D have to cope with this disease, the other organs and bodily systems are fighting much harder to keep everything going. The longer the body fights, the higher the risk for conditions like Thyroid Disease, Celiac Disease, Diabetic Seizures, Permanent Eye Conditions, Organ Failure, and Psychological problems due to the stress and hardship of such a substantial medical condition.
The point of this medical explanation of Type 1 Diabetes is to remind all of us that THERE IS A REASON. Parker amazes us everyday with making this disease look easy, but the reality is that this is a very difficult condition to live with. We are what stands between a life of T1D for Parker and other children like him, and a Cure.
The medical community has created artificial cochleae for human ears, artificial limbs, and so much more! Its only a matter of time before we can figure this out! Our little guys' bodies haven't given up the fight, so we can't stop fighting either!
Parker's Patriots will once again be walking in the Annual JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes! Please join us in supporting Parker and helping to find a cure.
